6 Healthy Breakfast Ideas Your Heart Will Love
April 02, 2026
Breakfast sets the tone for your entire day, and it can set the tone for your health, too.
But between busy mornings and grab-and-go fast food options, it’s easy to fall into routines that don’t exactly support your health.
That’s why we went to Bradley Biskup, PA, a lifestyle medicine specialist with the Heart & Vascular Institute at Hartford HealthCare, for six heart healthy breakfast ideas.
1. Oatmeal with berries
It’s a classic for a reason.
“Oats are rich in soluble fiber, which can help lower LDL, or ‘bad,’ cholesterol,” says Biskup. “And berries are great for providing antioxidants, and natural sweetness to cut down on added sugar.”
Skip the flavored packets and sweeten it yourself with fruit or a sprinkle of cinnamon.

2. Avocado toast on whole grain bread
You might be tired of seeing it on your Instagram feed, but avocado toast does live up to the hype.
“Avocados provide heart healthy monounsaturated fats, which can help improve cholesterol levels,” Biskup notes.
Choose whole grain bread for added fiber, and consider topping it with sliced tomatoes, seeds or a poached egg to help you feel full longer.

3. Greek yogurt with nuts and fruit
If warming up oatmeal takes too long, this one’s for you.
“Greek yogurt offers protein, while nuts provide healthy fats,” says Biskup. “Just be sure to choose a plain, unflavored Greek yogurt to avoid the added sugar.”
Try customizing your own bowl with fresh fruit and a handful of almonds or walnuts.

4. Vegetable omelet
Surprise: Eggs can be part of a heart healthy diet.
“It’s often more about what you add to your eggs,” Biskup notes. “Loading them with vegetables increases fiber and nutrients without adding excess saturated fat.”
Just use olive oil instead of butter, and go easy on processed meats like bacon or sausage.
5. Smoothies
Done right, smoothies can be a great way to start your day.
“A balanced smoothie should include fiber, protein and healthy fats,” says Biskup. “Try to choose either fresh vegetables or frozen fruit without any added sugar.”
Blend spinach or kale with frozen fruit, nut butter and unsweetened milk for a breakfast that supports both heart health and energy levels.

6. Chia pudding
Looking for something simple to prep for the whole week?
“Chia seeds are rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, both of which support heart health,” Biskup explains.
Mix them with milk the night before and top with fruit in the morning for an easy, ready to grab option.

Start your day right
You don’t need a perfect breakfast, just a thoughtful, heart healthy one.
“It can be tempting to have a quick breakfast that doesn’t offer many nutrients, or keep you full long enough,” Biskup cautions. “Instead, try to get some fiber, protein and healthy fats in your breakfast to keep you energized until lunch.”
Because taking care of your heart doesn’t start at dinner. It starts first thing in the morning.
